Kevin Gardner\, author of The Granite Kiss\, explains how and why New England came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls\, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built\, how their styles emerged and changed over time\, and their significance to the famous New England landscape. DESCRIPTION:Abolitionists of Noyes Academy\n\n\nIn 1835\, abolitionists opened one of the nation’s first integrated schools in Canaan\, NH\, attracting eager African-American students from as far away as Boston\, Providence\, and New York City. Outraged community leaders responded by raising a mob that dragged the academy building off its foundation and ran the African-American students out of town. New Hampshire’s first experiment in educational equality was brief\, but it helped launch the public careers of a trio of extraordinary African-American leaders: Henry Highland Garnet\, Alexander Crummell\, and Thomas Sipkins Sidney. It’s remote location\, 360 degree view\, and lack of electric light pollution mean you can see the whole sky on a clear night.\nDoors open at 7:30 pm for those who want to come early and find their perfect viewing spot. The tour of the night sky begins at 8pm. In the past\, participants have brought a picnic dinner to enjoy the time spent waiting for the sun to set.\nPlease bring your own blankets and chairs\, and a flashlight or headlamp. Flashlights will be necessary to find your way when leaving the event! We do ask that you keep all light sources off during the presentation.
