SUMMARY:Chaffee Wildlife Sanctuary Open House
DESCRIPTION: Chaffee Wildlife Sanctuary\n\nOpen House\nThe Chaffee Wildlife Sanctuary at Post Pond is one of the brightest stars in the firmament of Lyme’s many special nature preserves. \nOver the last few years\, Lyme’s Conservation Commission\, in partnership with the Upper Valley Trails Alliance (UVTA)\, has facilitated several projects aimed at enhancing The Chaffee visitor’s experience including a wildlife viewing blind\, an upgraded footbridge crossing over Trout Brook that connects The Chaffee to the town’s athletic fields and the installation of a thousand foot long all persons accessible trail. \nDon’t know about The Chaffee? Been planning a visit but just couldn’t seem to work it into your schedule? That can change. Come to an Open House gathering at The Chaffee this coming Sunday\, the 13th and enjoy its many charms. \nThe event begins at 1:30 pm. Members of Lyme’s Conservation Commission and the UVTA will be on hand to answer questions and show you around. Cider and donuts will be served. \nThere’s limited parking at The Chaffee’s Rt. 10 entrance\, but there is ample space in the Chase Beach parking area which is a short walk across the footbridge into the preserve. \nQuestions? Email the Conservation Commission \n \nLyme Conservation Commission & The Upper Valley Trails Alliance (UVTA)

SUMMARY:Housing Forum
DESCRIPTION:Housing Forum\n\n7:00pm – Town Offices Conference Room\nThe Planning Board is unanimous in wanting to maintain the characteristics of Lyme that residents find so attractive. We can all agree there is a shortage of housing in the Upper Valley. \nHow might Lyme participate in solving this regional problem? The Planning Board would like to share what we have learned and find out from you whether or how we should pursue incentivizing housing opportunities. \nThe Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission (RPC) is our regional planning commission. A recent RPC study suggests that the Upper Valley needs 5600 additional housing units by 2040\, and that Lyme’s fair share goal is 145\, at least double the growth rate of the past 15 years. \nThe Planning Board has invited the RPC to a public meeting to discuss the housing shortage and allocations that they have suggested on October 10th at 7pm. \nPlease come and learn with us so we can work together to address the housing issue as a community. For more information (and a zoom link for the forum) visit: https://www.lymenh.gov/planning-board/events/102161 \n

SUMMARY:Lyme Community Power
DESCRIPTION:Lyme Community Power\n\nPublic Notice from the Community Power Coalition of NH\n\nWe’re excited about the launch of Lyme Community Power! Most of you recently received the Public Notice from the Community Power Coalition of NH (CPCNH) regarding the commencement of service of Lyme Community Power.\nPlease attend the information session being held next Thursday\, August 29th at 7pm in the Lyme School. Also\, please do not hesitate to reach out to one of us (see below) if you have questions about what you need to do as we transition to non-profit\, community-based electric supply.\nThe bottom line is that most of you don’t have to do anything! Eversource and NHEC customers will be AUTOMATICALLY enrolled in Lyme Community Power and will begin saving money in October. (See the exceptions below.)\nThis program is not mandatory of course. You have the option to OPT-OUT of the program by following the instructions on the mailing.\nMore importantly\, you have the option to OPT-UP TO GREENER POWER. Everyone will be automatically enrolled in “Granite Basic” electrical supply\, currently at $0.086/kWh. But opting-up to “Granite Plus” or “Clean 50” will still save you money over the Eversource rate while using a greater percentage of electrical supply from renewable sources. WE HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO OPT-UP to the level of renewable power that fits with your ability to pay. Remember that the cost of the energy we use is not only in dollars. As a community we’re dedicated to 100% reliance on clean\, renewable sources of electricity by 2030\, as voted at Town Meeting back in 2020. Please Opt-up by visiting the portal on the website.\n\nOK. The exceptions to automatic enrollment:\n\nIf you have already engaged a competitive supplier other than your utility\, you will not be automatically enrolled. You will need to request enrollment using the portal on the website or by calling 866-603-7697.\nLyme Community Power does not currently support net metering\, so if you have solar panels and are receiving energy credits through net metering\, we don’t want to automatically enroll you. Unfortunately\, Eversource and NHEC have not been consistent with providing customer information to CPCNH regarding which customers are receiving net metering energy credits. Net metered customers should contact CPCNH (1-866-603-7697) to verify that they won’t be automatically enrolled. (This is all explained in the mailing.)\n\nAgain\, please attend the information session being held next Thursday\, August 29th at 7pm in the Lyme School. Contact CPCNH (1-866-603-7697) or one of us if you have questions.\nClick HERE for more information\n \nLyme Community Power

SUMMARY:Abenaki Program on Zoom – Converse Free Library
DESCRIPTION:Now Who Shall Judge the Indians?\nHow 500 Years of Colonization Has Impacted the Abenaki Peoples of New Hampshire and the Northeast\nwith\nAnne Jennison\nvia Zoom\n \nTUESDAY\, NOVEMBER 21\, 7 pm\n\nThe “People of the Dawnland” (Abenaki/Wabanaki) of New Hampshire and the Northeast are the first Indigenous peoples in North America to have had contact with Europeans. In this presentation\, Anne examines how European colonization of North America impacted generations of Abenaki/Wabanaki people and highlights the ways in which the Abenaki/Wabanaki peoples have acted as agents of their own change through education\, self-advocacy\, efforts to revitalize their languages and traditional arts\, and by working with archeologists\, anthropologists\, and scientists to recover and reveal more about their history and traditional knowledge.\n \nAnne Jennison is a traditional Native American storyteller and historian of European and Abenaki heritage. While Anne’s storytelling skills have been polished by more than 30 years of experience sharing Indigenous lesson stories with audiences of all kinds\, she also believes that her growth and development as a human being has been deeply influenced by internalizing the content of the Northeastern lesson stories that she tells. With master’s degrees in both Storytelling and History\, Anne brings a wealth of cultural and historical knowledge to enrich her retelling of timeless Northeast Woodlands Native American stories. Anne is listed on the New Hampshire Traditional Artists Roster as a traditional Native American storyteller & craftsperson.  \n \nAdditionally\, Anne is the current Chair of the NH Commission on Native American Affairs\, a member of the the Indigenous NH Collaborative Collective\, an affiliate faculty member for the University of New Hampshire Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) Minor\, and a co-creator of the “People of the Dawnland” interpretive exhibit about the Abenaki/Wabanaki peoples at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth\, NH.  Anne continues to act as a consultant for the museum’s ongoing Abenaki Heritage Initiative – a plan to develop and sustain exhibits and events at Strawbery Banke Museum that focus on the history and culture of the Abenaki\, Indigenous peoples of New Hampshire and the Northeast\, both past and present.\n\n\nTHIS PROGRAM IS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE FRIENDS OF LYME LIBRARY \n\n\nRegister here
