SUMMARY:Live Better with Vision Loss - Latham Library
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about how you can “Live Better with Vision Loss”! \nCo-sponsored by Thetford’s Community Nurse Sunny Martinson\, the Community Nurse of Thetford (CNT) Board\, and Latham Library \nOn Wednesday April 3rd from 12-1pm at the Latham Library on Thetford Hill\, Dan Norris will discuss adaptive strategies and devices that can help a person with low vision to adapt their hobbies and activities of daily living to compensate for vision loss. The strategies will include adaptive lighting\, magnification\, contrast\, and electronic solutions to accomplish your desired goals. \nLibrarian Holly Lague will be on hand to discuss the resources available in Thetford and through the wider Vermont library network. \nThe availability of this wealth of information for those with limited vision was called to our attention by Sarah Jo Brown\, former Thetford resident and a founding board member of CNT. We hope whether you or a family member\, coworker\, friend or neighbor is struggling with vision\, or if you work in a role that supports these individuals\, that you will consider joining us to learn more about strategies that can help! \nAbout the presenter\nDaniel Norris has served as the Director of Adult Services with the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired since 2012. Dan has been with the agency since 2004. He is also the Vision Rehabilitation Therapy Program Coordinator and Methods Instructor for UMass Boston since May of 2014. He has numerous related degrees and certification in the field (for details\, see the Latham Library website post.) \nDan serves on several national committees dedicated to improving services for seniors with vision loss. He is visually impaired himself\, having developed a juvenile form of Macular Degeneration at the age of eight. In this role Dan has acted as a mentor and role model for many transition aged children in the state of Vermont and elsewhere.

It is now known that understanding more about why things hurt can actually help people to overcome their pain. SUMMARY:Thetford's Non-Fiction Book Group
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of Thetford’s informal nonfiction book discussion group will take place at Latham Library on Thetford Hill on Tuesday March 26th at 7 pm.   Please note:  The group will meet at theoriginal time of 7 pm and there will be no Zoom. \n\nWe will be discussing Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin.\n\n\n\n\nOn May 18\, 1860\, William H. Seward\, Salmon P. Chase\, Edward Bates\, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor\, his rivals were dismayed and angry. \nThroughout the turbulent 1850s\, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded was the result of a character that had been forged by life experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because he possessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men\, to experience what they were feeling\, to understand their motives and desires. \nThis capacity enabled President Lincoln to bring his disgruntled opponents together\, create the most unusual cabinet in history\, and marshal their talents to preserve the Union and win the war. \n\n\n\nThe book may be obtained from your local library\, via interlibrary loan\,  possibly as an audio or e-book via ListenUp Vermont or in New Hampshire\,  New Hampshire Downloadable Books. Users need only get a barcode number from their local library to use the services.  Or you can obtain the book from your favorite local bookseller\, or via www.bookfinder.com\, the aggregator site for booksellers both large and small from all over the world\, and for books both new and secondhand.\n\nAll are welcome and we look forward to seeing you.

As life expectancy continues to increase\, it’s clear we need to work toward a new image of aging – one that includes adaptive\, productive\, vital years full of love\, laughter\, and intimacy. In this talk\, we’ll explore how the ‘secrets’ to aging gracefully exist within the routines of daily life\, and how by understanding the biology of being human\, we can implement best practices of being healthy\, which is the key in determining whether we just add years to our life or we add life to those years. \nAll Welcome

SUMMARY:CANCELED - Hyannis Sound A Cappella Concert
DESCRIPTION:The much anticipated Spring Alumni Tour is Canceled by the snow storm.\nAfter a 5-year hiatus (COVID ripple effects) the Hyannis Sound a cappella group will be returning to Lyme on Sunday March 24th for a 2pm concert at the Congregational Church\, as part of their spring Alumni tour.\n\nThe Hyannis Sound is a college a cappella “super group”: 10 college-aged young men whose summer job is singing weekly concerts at multiple venues on Cape Cod.  During their Upper Valley spring tour the current group is often joined by alumni from earlier years; former Lyme resident Marc Whittington sang in the group back in the day!\n\n$10 for adults and children by donations.  The Hanover High School a cappella group Dachords will be singing that afternoon as an opening act.\n\nThey always put on a good show: tight harmonies\, soaring solos\, and a high energy performance — a musical antidote to the mud-season blahs!\nLyme Congregational Church

SUMMARY:Ramadan Begins
DESCRIPTION:Ramadan Kareem to all our Muslim brothers and sisters!\nWishing you generous blessings during this holy month\nFor those who wish to know more about this spiritually full month: Ramadan is considered one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims. In Ramadan\, Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an\, and fast from food and drink during the sunlit hours as a means of drawing closer to God and cultivating self-control\, gratitude\, and compassion for those less fortunate. Ramadan is a month of intense spiritual rejuvenation with a heightened focus on devotion\, during which Muslims spend extra time reading the Qur’an and performing special prayers.  \nMore from ING\, Educating for Cultural Literacy and Mutual Respect
