The July edition of MAMA’s Expert Insight Series features MAMA founder Julie Scelfo in conversation with Laura Marquez-Garrett, an attorney with the Seattle-based Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC), which represents families nationwide whose children have been harmed by social media. After a twenty-year career handling complex litigation, Marquez-Garrett joined the SMVLC to support its mission of holding social media companies legally accountable when they fail to protect users from foreseeable harm. So far, SMVLC has initiated more than 300 complaints related from families whose children have died as a result of content or conduct on social media platforms.
Marquez-Garrett is an expert on the principles of product liability and a dedicated advocate for improving social media safety. They have called for the need for updated state and federal policies, presented before the House Energy & Commerce Committee, and spoken on various panels, podcasts, films. They are a graduate of Harvard Law School, a member of the National LGBT Bar Association, and a parent.
